ABIT International Congress 2024: Reflections and prospects for the future of the textile industry
The Brazilian textile industry in the global context will be at the center of the debates and reflections proposed for the next Abit International Congress in October in Salvador.
Abit (The Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) is starting registration for another edition of the event which, for the last nine years, has brought together exponents of the national textile chain – from input production to retail. The Abit International Congress 2024 has officially opened its registration period, inviting executives, businesspeople, researchers and other interested parties to take part in the event that opens up new windows for reflection on this important sector of the economy in Brazil and around the world.
Under the theme “Brazil – World Connections: Strategic Paths to Competitiveness”, this edition seeks to shed light on the challenges and opportunities that will define Brazil’s role on the international stage.
With a carefully structured schedule, the event will address fundamental issues such as the new post-pandemic global reality, strategic international markets, regulatory policies, technological innovation, sustainability and strategies to increase the sector’s competitiveness.
The Brazilian textile and apparel industry, although one of the largest in the world, still faces significant challenges in reaching its full potential in the international market. Representing almost 2% of the national GDP and generating more than 1.3 million formal jobs, it is crucial to explore new approaches and solutions to consolidate a more robust and sustainable position on the global scene.
The Abit International Congress 2024 acts as a relevant platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences between industry leaders, promoting in-depth discussions aimed at significant changes. This is an unmissable opportunity for anyone who wants to be at the forefront of changes in the textile and apparel industry.
The Brazilian textile market in the global context
Abit’s Chief Executive Officer, Fernando Pimentel, notes that although Brazil is one of the largest global textile producers, it faces a recurring
deficit in the balance of trade in these sectors. For him, “it is crucial that Brazil advances more aggressively in the international market, seeking to expand its exports and global trade relations”.
In addition to the competitive challenges, Pimentel emphasizes the need to improve internal conditions, such as trade agreements and reducing the so-called “Brazil Cost”. Emphasizing issues such as compliance, sustainability and respect for environmental and labor standards, the executive presents them as pillars for effective management and for strengthening the national industry. He adds that Brazil has valuable assets, such as quality designers and globally recognized segments like beachwear, jeanswear and fitness.
For Pimentel, high costs and trade barriers, such as high taxes, hamper Brazil’s competitiveness on the world stage. As an example, he cites the trade agreements between the United States and countries like Mexico and Colombia, whereby textile products imported from these countries benefit from reduced tariffs or exemptions. “The same does not happen with Brazilian products,” he says.
Within the perspective of the theme of the Abit International Congress 2024, Fernando Pimentel reinforces that it is essential for Brazil to seek to increase its global competitiveness. “This will happen by reviving its export vocation, as well as the way to face the adversities imposed by international competitors. Many of them operate with subsidies and under very different regulatory conditions to those adopted by Brazil,” he concludes.
