QIMA’s Q3 Barometer – COVID-19 Impact: China Sourcing Suggests W-Shaped Recovery While Manufacturing Struggles in the Rest of Asia

Throughout Q2, global supply chains have remained in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, with lockdowns in buying and manufacturing regions triggering dramatic yet erratic drops in demand and supply. As global trade enters the second half of 2020, the pandemic has not completely redrawn the maps of global sourcing – but it has profoundly accelerated and deepened a number of pre-existing trends, especially diversification away from China. Overall, China sourcing patterns suggest a W-shaped recovery while manufacturing struggles in the rest of Asia.

Here are some key points:

US businesses are among the most likely to diversify sourcing, with 95% of US-based respondents stating plans to change suppliers due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing concerns around the US-China trade war. By contrast, only half of EU businesses and under one-third of APAC businesses stated such plans.

Top alternative supplier destinations of choice for US-based businesses are Vietnam (cited by half of all US respondents) and South Asia (30% of respondents expressed a preference for Bangladesh or India).

US brands in certain industries are continuing to rely heavily on China. Electrical and Electronics inspections in China for US-based buyers recorded an uptick of +7.5% YoY in May and 15% in June 2020.

Yeşim has initiated a project to produce anti-viral and anti-bacterial face masks using knitted fabrics composing organic cotton and lycra material and developed two tight and flexible products. This fabric demonstrates high coverage properties thanks to its tight structure and high breathability thanks to its light and slim design. One of the most significant features of the mask, which is developed in cooperation with Health Guard, a company with 25 years of experience in biotechnology and related products, is to stop the virus as soon as it is contacted.

CEO of Yeşim Textile Şenol Şankaya stated that these masks are washable up to 50 times and are therefore considered sustainable and said “Our products are anti-bacterial and 99.4 percent effective in preventing the virus. This fabric prevents reproduction and growth of harmful viruses, mildew, bacteria or fungal spores and facilitates breathing. Our products are not medical or surgical face masks but rather protective masks. These organic and environmentally friendly masks can be used in manufacturing plants, businesses or elsewhere outdoors in daily life.”

Şankaya stated that they are facing demand from abroad for these face masks and they have already exported some 50 thousand masks until now and that they are anticipating this demand to increase in the upcoming days and planning to export much higher quantities of masks after June. Şankaya added that they receive demand for masks also from fashion giants, who have provided Yeşim with various design samples, and that they are currently working on these samples and planning to launch these products by the end of summer. Şankaya also stated that they have made these masks available at the disposal of their employees before exporting them and that the health of their employees is of paramount importance for them.

COVID-19 represents an unprecedented challenge for the world, requiring everybody to work together. In response, Gerber Technology created a Global PPE Task Force and has since brought together more than 600 manufacturers, technology partners, and industry coalition partners to make PPE products available broadly around the world.

Leading companies, such as Coats for threads and industry connections or Zilingo for sourcing, have joined the PPE Task Force as coalition partners, strengthening support for manufacturers throughout the entire supply chain. Building on their successful experience of converting Chinese manufacturers to produce PPE to address the COVID-19 mitigation plans in China, Gerber and its partners formed a network to scale the global production and to match supply and demand for critically needed PPE products.

“Working across the industry in a unique ecosystem of professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences has allowed us to support manufacturers’ conversion to PPE production by providing support for raw material selection, procurement and technical specifications to finished goods delivery. It is an ambitious initiative, but through a lot of hard work by the team and our partners, it is quickly becoming a powerful engine to drive solid and efficient PPE mass production,” said Mohit Uberoi, CEO of Gerber Technology. “We would like to thank our employees and global network of partners for joining our mission and going the extra mile to maximize the production capacity and availability to protect both medical professionals and people on the frontlines.”

Gerber’s global network of technology partners have provided comprehensive expertise and support to build an end-to-end “trusted supply chain” for personal protective equipment. Gerber’s partners include leading industry companies and associations such as: AAFA, AAPN, Coats, Elevate Textiles, Fashion for Frontline, Henderson Sewing, Industrial Fabrics Association International, NCTO, SPESA, Suuchi, and Zilingo.

“The Gerber Team’s expertise, forward-thinking and innovative technology are a true asset during this difficult time as many companies are eager to ramp up production but aren’t sure where to begin,” said Kim Glas, President and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO). “With Gerber’s and NCTO’s combined support, manufacturers are able to quickly transform their supply chain and begin producing PPE in short order.”

“In unprecedented times we can be most effective by working together in partnerships for the greater good,” said Rajiv Sharma, Group Chief Executive, Coats. “By collaborating our innovation, expertise and industry connections we can deliver an industry-defining moment that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to have a devastating impact across the globe. Our staff and clients in all continents are impacted, and we want to contribute, even modestly, in fighting the pandemic.

For orders booked starting today we will be offering free quality inspection services in China for the production of masks and protective gear for medical staff.

Demand for sourcing masks and medical protective gear has never been higher and factories are rushing to produce these items. However, in a health crisis like this, it is imperative that the quality of these products is checked before they are distributed to those most in need.

Our on-site inspection services can help by checking that workmanship quality is inadequate, the quantity, labeling and packaging are correct and that factories have the required certificates and licences to manufacture such items.

If you have inspection needs in China for masks or personal protective equipment, please reach out and we’ll be happy to help!

Based on its successful initiative in China, Gerber Technology today announced the creation of the Gerber PPE Task Force and Resource Team to support their global customers and partners as they work to increase their production or transition to manufacturing personal protective equipment (PPE). In a global context where COVID-19 inexorably continues to spread, the global shortage of masks and other personal protective equipment needed to keep healthcare workers safe is a concern of everyone.

More than 300 manufacturers, including major global companies, rely on Gerber’s advanced software, hardware solutions and expertise to produce masks and other PPE. Over the last few months, Gerber has helped several customers transition into producing protective masks and other much needed medical supplies including Taglio Marchesini (Italy) and Shanghai Challenge Textile Co., Ltd.

“In what’s an unprecedented global emergency, all of us in the manufacturing industry need to work together to protect those fighting COVID-19 on the front lines,” said Mohit Uberoi, CEO of Gerber Technology. “With over 50 years of expertise, we are doing our part and helping companies quickly transition into manufacturing PPE just as we did for our customers in China a few weeks ago and helped apparel companies successfully transition to manufacturing masks and other personal protective equipment.”

The Gerber PPE Resource Team is made up of dedicated experts who can offer advice, share best practices, support and technology to produce certain types of masks as well as protective apparel and accessories including raw material procurement and on-site support.

The Gerber PPE Resource Team is available to support PPE manufacturing including:

Implementing pre-defined patterns and markers or defining fabric/sewing requirements.

Helping with the setup of cutter parameters specific to the selected fabrics.

Providing training, software, equipment and service technicians to ramp up production.

Changing over current production lines to the production of PPE.

Connecting supply and demand for PPE via our global ecosystem of customers and partners.

Introducing existing PPE manufacturers to those converting to PPE production.

We welcome customers and experts that are available to share their expertise and join the initiative.
