Portuguese Textile and Apparel Association congratulates Mário Jorge Machado on his re-election as President of EURATEX.

This new mandate reflects the confidence placed in his leadership and his continued commitment to strengthening the competitiveness, resilience, and strategic relevance of the European textile and apparel industry.

As highlighted by ATP Director General, Ana Paula Dinis:

“I have been following the work of EURATEX since 2004, which made this a particularly special and emotional moment for me. It was wonderful to reconnect with former colleagues, revisit shared initiatives, and reflect on everything that has happened over the years. Companies may sometimes feel they are facing challenges alone, but behind the scenes there are associations such as EURATEX and ATP working every day to defend the interests of our industry. Much of this work goes unnoticed. In many cases, more time is spent fighting the battles than talking about them. Thank you to the EURATEX team for creating this moment and, above all, for 30 years of commitment to the European textile and apparel industry. Congratulations on this milestone, and best wishes for continued success in the years ahead!”

ATP will continue to work closely with EURATEX to promote a stronger, more sustainable, and globally competitive European textile and apparel sector.

The final conference of the European VETRINE project brought together ATP – Portuguese Textile and Apparel Association, project partners, experts, students, and industry representatives to present the key outcomes of a collaborative effort dedicated to promoting sustainability, innovation, and skills development within the fashion sector.

The high level of participation, both in person and online, confirmed the relevance of the topics addressed by the project, which sought to tackle the challenges of the sustainable transition through the development of specialised training programmes and the practical application of new methodologies across the fashion value chain.

Importance of collaboration

During the event, Christina Stamataki, from Eurotraining Educational Organization and Project Coordinator, highlighted the importance of collaboration among the various European partners in ensuring the initiative’s success. Ana Paula Dinis, ATP Director General, shared ATP’s experience in coordinating connections between trainees and companies within the sector, a key component in ensuring the practical application of the knowledge acquired.

One of the central moments of the conference focused on the students from four European countries whose sustainable fashion products received the highest number of votes on the project platform. The participants presented their work to the audience, followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by Alice Gras of AG Conseil, which explored the impact of the experience on their academic and professional development.

The VETRINE project demonstrated how international cooperation between training providers, technology centres, business associations, and companies can help accelerate the sustainable transition of the European textile and apparel sector, preparing a new generation of professionals for the challenges of the green economy.

On 11 June, EURATEX hosted the Brussels Textiles Forum 2026, bringing together 150 participants from the European textile and apparel ecosystem, EU institutions, industry, social partners and consumer organisations. Sponsored by Indorama Ventures, the event provided a timely platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the sector.

The Forum took place at a defining moment for Europe’s textile and clothing industry. High energy prices, global competition, regulatory pressure, e-commerce imports, sustainability requirements and geopolitical uncertainty are all reshaping the conditions under which European companies operate. Throughout the day, speakers and participants reflected on how Europe can support a textile industry that remains competitive, innovative and resilient while leading the transition towards sustainability and circularity.

Competitiveness problem

Opening the Forum, EURATEX President Mário Jorge Machado underlined that Europe does not have a textile problem, but a competitiveness problem. His message set the tone for the day: European textile companies are ready to invest, innovate and decarbonise, but they need fair rules, affordable energy, effective enforcement and industrial conditions that allow production to remain in Europe.

The morning sessions focused on the competitiveness of the European Union and the future of the textile and clothing industry. Speakers highlighted the importance of reducing red tape, strengthening the Single Market, scaling innovation, improving access to investment and ensuring that European rules apply equally to all products placed on the EU market. The debate also confirmed the strategic role of textiles beyond fashion, including in healthcare, construction, transport, agriculture and defence. A stakeholder panel brought together perspectives from industry, the European Parliament, trade unions and consumer organisations. Discussions addressed the need to make circularity economically viable, support investment, use public procurement strategically, retain skills and industrial expertise, and strengthen consumer trust. The panel confirmed that the future of textiles requires cooperation across the full value chain and a stronger alignment between competitiveness, sustainability and social responsibility.

Sessione on the policy files

In the afternoon, participants joined dedicated sessions on the policy files that will shape the sector in the coming years. Discussions covered eco-design and the Digital Product Passport, customs reform and e-commerce imports, energy and decarbonisation, trade diversification, textile waste and the Circular Economy Act, and the future European Product Act. Across the sessions, one message was clear: sustainability, competitiveness and enforcement must go hand in hand. The Forum also highlighted the need for a stronger and more coherent European approach. Circularity will only scale if secondary materials become economically viable, customs and market surveillance systems are strengthened, energy remains affordable, and companies receive the right conditions to invest in Europe. Participants also stressed the importance of avoiding fragmented rules across Member States and ensuring that the Single Market remains a driver of competitiveness.

30th anniversary celebration

The day concluded with EURATEX’ 30th anniversary celebration, offering a moment to look back at three decades of cooperation, advocacy and representation for the European textile and apparel industry. Speeches from honorary presidents recalled the origins of EURATEX and its role in building a united voice for the sector in Brussels. The anniversary also carried a strong message of unity in adversity. Over the past 30 years, the industry has faced repeated crises, from globalisation and supply chain disruptions to energy shocks, unfair competition and an increasingly complex regulatory environment. Yet the celebration showed that the strength of the European textile community lies in its capacity to adapt, cooperate and speak with one voice.

The Brussels Textiles Forum 2026 showed that the European textile and apparel industry is actively engaging in the transition, proposing solutions and building alliances. The message from Brussels was clear: Europe needs a competitive, innovative and resilient textile industry, and the right conditions must be created for it to stay, invest and grow in Europe.

A group of 21 Brazilian brands participated in a series of events that make up Miami Swim Week 2026 in the United States, and achieved significant results. The volume of business conducted during the event exceeded US$426,500, and the expectation for the next 12 months is approximately US$2.03 million. Together, they made more than 460 contacts.

Support

All companies received support from Texbrasil (Brazilian Textile and Fashion Industry Internationalization Program), a partnership between Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) and ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), with 18 of them showcasing their collections at SwimShow, considered one of the most traditional and relevant swimwear fashion fairs in the world, which took place between May 30 and June 1 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Unprecedented action

Simultaneously with SwimShow and at the same location, two other Brazilian companies made their debut at Curve Miami, also with the support of the Texbrasil Program: Mari M and Plié. Another unprecedented action that marked this year’s edition was that, for the first time, Colombiamoda Miami opened its doors to brands from other countries, and Brazil was represented by Borana. The event was held at Throw Social, between May 27 and 29.

“Brazilian beachwear stood out for the high quality of its products, the creativity that reflects the country’s identity, and an internationally recognized standard of excellence. These attributes reinforced the competitiveness of national brands and consolidated Brazil as a global reference in this segment,” says Adriana D’Agostini, Commercial Promotion Manager at Abit.

For IAF members, staying competitive means reading the season before it arrives. As Spring/Summer 2027 collections move through the fashion weeks and trade shows and the buying season approaches, FashionUnited has opened a dedicated SS27 section to help members and their buyers prepare.

Trend insight and need-to-know news

In one place, the section brings together the trend insights and need-to-know news that define the upcoming season: the colours, fabrics, silhouettes, patterns and styles shaping SS27, drawn from world-renowned trend forecasters. Coverage spans every category a buyer works across — womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, footwear and accessories — alongside the latest brand collections as they launch.

From macro picture to the rail

Messe Frankfurt continues to expand its international textile network with the announcement of Val:ue Milan. Moving beyond the traditional trade fair model, Val:ue Milan debuts as a prestigious, boutique-style business hub exclusively dedicated to elected fabrics and accessories for apparel.
On April 28, the Brazilian government signed the presidential decree allowing the immediate application of the Mercosur–European Union Trade Agreement in Brazil, enabling its entry into force on May 1.

With the commercial chapter entering into force, even on a provisional basis, the agreement provides for: gradual tariff reductions; elimination of trade barriers; and greater regulatory predictability.

Opportunities

For the textile and apparel industry, the agreement creates opportunities for Mercosur companies to gain greater access to a market that imports approximately €115 billion annually. The Abit (Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) considers the agreement’s entry into force a significant step toward strengthening trade relations and enhancing Brazil’s competitive integration into the global economy. The Association welcomes this progress, recognizing its potential to expand investments, exports, innovation, and job creation.

The reduction of import duties established under the agreement will be implemented gradually for most textile and apparel products.

Ongoing cooperation

Abit and Euratex, together with other sector associations from Mercosur, AICP and FITA, created the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement – Textile and Apparel Dialogue. The initiative aims to provide an organized framework for ongoing cooperation between the textile and apparel industries on both sides of the Atlantic.

More recently, on April 27, Abit participated in important meetings in Europe. In Prato, in the Tuscany region of Italy, the Association attended the Italy–Latin America Economic Forum alongside institutional and business leaders in sector-focused panels aimed at expanding economic cooperation. In the city of Porto, Portugal, Abit also took part in the event Em Foco Brasil – Textile and Apparel Sector, where it addressed the current landscape of Brazil’s textile industry and joint opportunities, as well as the impacts of the European Union–Mercosur agreement on the textile and apparel sector.

Speaking at the Conference Titled “Transformation Journey of the Turkish Apparel Industry,” IHKIB Chairman Mustafa Paşahan: Customs Union Agreement Must Be Updated Without Delay for Our Competitiveness

Mustafa Paşahan: “The Customs Union, in its current form, has more of a restrictive effect than a supportive one on our cooperation. The free trade agreements the EU has signed with third countries generate asymmetric outcomes for Türkiye. For this reason, a formula must be found to include Türkiye in the EU’s FTA negotiation processes.”

Mustafa Paşahan, Chairman of the Istanbul Apparel Exporters’ Association (IHKIB), stated that the CustomsUnion Agreement signed with the European Union 30 years ago, in its current form, has more of a restrictive effect on cooperation between the parties than a supportive one. Paşahan underlined that a lasting competitive advantage in the EU market can only be achieved through the full modernization of the Customs Union.

The conference, titled “Transformation Journey of the Turkish Apparel Industry” and organized by IHKIB, brought together the presidents of international industry organizations, brand representatives, sector professionals, exporters, and experts.Delivering the opening remarks, Mustafa Paşahan drew attention to the EU’s position as a strategic market for the Turkish apparel sector. Noting that 61 percent of Türkiye’s total apparel exports are directed to EU member states, Paşahan made the following remarks:

“We know that a lasting competitive advantage in the EU market can only be achieved through the full modernization of the Customs Union. However, the Customs Union in its current form has more of a restrictive effect on our cooperation than a supportive one. The free trade agreements (FTAs) the EU has concluded with third countries generate asymmetric outcomes for Türkiye. For this reason, a formula must be found to include Türkiye in the EU’s ongoing FTA negotiation processes, and the Customs Union must be updated in line with the shifting economic landscape. On another front, the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Rules of Origin Cumulation has facilitated North African countries’ access to the EU market — a development that diminishes the advantages Turkey derives from the Customs Union and intensifies competitive pressure, particularly in the textile and readyto- wear sectors. It is therefore of great importance that developments pertaining to rules of origin be taken into account during the process of updating the Customs Union. We are also closely monitoring developments related to the ‘Made in Europe’ initiative, and we expect a framework to be established that does not exclude the value chains in which Türkiye is integrated.”

TIM Chairman Gültepe: We Object to the Customs Union Being Turned into Shackles

Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) Chairman Mustafa Gültepe, in his address, recalled the FTAs the EU has concluded with MERCOSUR countries and India. Stating that they have no objection to the EU signing FTAs with third countries, Gültepe continued:

“However, we strongly object to these FTAs turning the 30-year-old Customs Union Agreement into shackles for Turkey. We have serious objections to the possibility of products of Indian and South American origin entering our country duty-free indirectly through the EU. We are a country that is formally conducting full membership negotiations with the EU — even if those negotiations are effectively frozen. Accordingly, we have rights as well as obligations. Rather than being a neighbor whose door is only knocked on in difficult times, we want to be a strategic partner with whom the EU develops sustainable cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit.”

Other Speakers at the Event:

Mario Jorge Machado, President of EURATEX (European Apparel and Textile Confederation): EU Regulations Serve Not as a Barrier but as a Strategic Market Filter, Providing a Competitive Edge to Turkish Companies That Align Early.

“The EU regulatory framework should not be a barrier — it is a market access filter. Turkish companies that align early will not just comply; they will compete on terms that others cannot match.”

Stefano Festa Marzotto, President of the International Apparel Federation (IAF): IAF, ITMF, and IHKIB are driving industry transformation by uniting manufacturers, brands, and governments under a shared, manufacturer-centered agenda.

“Industry transformation will not happen through individual actors working in isolation – not through brands alone setting requirements, development partners alone running project-by-project programmes, manufacturers alone investing without support and infrastructure. It requires a new approach – one that places manufacturers at the centre and allows the whole industry to work together in the same direction, with a shared agenda and a shared understanding of what needs to happen, and in what sequence. This conviction underpinned IAF and ITMF’s joint founding of ATTI, the sector’s platform for manufacturer-driven collective action to realise industry transformation. And it underpins IHKIB’s role as a pioneer of the initiative. By supporting manufacturer leadership while leveraging the participation of brands, government representatives and industry experts, IAF, ITMF and IHKIB are creating the conditions for coordination demanded by industry transformation.”

Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Business Engagement Lead at UN Climate Change (UNFCCC): Heading towards COP31, the Turkish apparel industry is leveraging its strategic role in the European ecosystem to accelerate climate action through strengthened public-private partnerships.

“We are now in a decisive phase of implementation. As we look ahead to COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, the Global Climate Action Agenda underscores what the real economy is already demonstrating: solutions exist, and proven approaches are being deployed. The central challenge for the fashion industry is no longer to define what needs to be done, but to accelerate the pace and scale of implementation. This requires strengthened collaboration between public and private actors across value chains to enable the conditions for delivery—through predictable policy frameworks, accessible finance, clear demand signals, and partnerships that translate ambition into action.”

“Today, the Turkish apparel industry is a strong and well-established part of the European production ecosystem, and Türkiye has become the European Union’s largest apparel supplier in its closest geography. Thanks to the Customs Union, our industry is deeply integrated into European value chains and has evolved into a reliable, competitive and strategic production hub for Europe.

Hüsnü Dilemre, Director General for International Agreements and European Union at the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Türkiye: Türkiye aims to turn the green transition into a strategic opportunity by aligning with EU standards to reinforce its position as Europe’s most sustainable, resilient, and competitive manufacturing hub.

We see the green transition not as a challenge, but as a major opportunity to further strengthen this position. Sustainability, circularity and traceability are becoming central elements of global trade, and our industry has already gained significant experience in adapting to these new expectations and producing in line with EU standards. In the coming period, by continuing our alignment with evolving EU legislation under the Customs Union, we aim to accelerate the green transformation of existing supply chains together with the EU and further reinforce Türkiye’s role as a sustainable, resilient and competitive manufacturing base.”
