Three industry workshops on the subject of setting new standards for material innovation and sustainability are taking place across three continents in November, brought about by a unique collaboration between the International Apparel Federation (IAF), its associate member Bayer MaterialScience and its members [TC]2, CCCT and the WFSGI.

The workshops are essential events for all fashion and sportswear brands that use coated fabrics such as synthetic polyurethane leather (PU leather) in their collections. Bayer MaterialScience has recently launched its new offering ‘INSQIN®’ to the textile industry – coating technology that sets a new level in material sustainability, as well as offering a suite of services to expedite innovation and increase supply chain transparency.

INSQIN® technology from Bayer can dramatically reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing, increasing worker safety, reducing pollution and waste, and saving water and energy. The IAF supports the industry in striving for better environmental performance. Sometimes opportunities arise that allow for big leaps to be made, but often these leaps are blocked by the complex supply chains that exist within the industry. Material innovations have to pass through many different levels within the supply chain, across a number of different companies, before they finally reach brand owners and retailers. This is why the IAF is taking a step towards supporting workshops which directly link material innovation with chemical suppliers, manufacturers, brands and retailers.

Each workshop consists of two parts. The first part is the explanation of the new way of manufacturing PU coated fabrics and its effect on the environment. The other part explores the market for PU leather and the way in which material innovation reaches the consumer market.

The first workshop will take place in New York in the iconic Empire State Building on the 3rd November 2014. It is organized by IAF member [TC]2 in conjunction with the Fashion Scholarship Fund. The second workshop will take place in Shanghai at CCCT’s well-equipped training center on the 12th November. The third workshop is part of the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry Manufacturers Forum annual event in Leipzig, Germany on the 17th November.
